Er ragt \u00f6stlich von Otjiwarongo bis zu 200 m hoch aus der Ebene der Omaheke heraus, wie dieser Teil der Kalahari genannt wird. An dieser nat\u00fcrlichen Barriere bleiben oft Wolken h\u00e4ngen, die dann abregnen.<\/p>\n
Die obere Schicht des Berges besteht aus rotem Sandstein, der por\u00f6s ist und das Regenwasser aufsaugt wie ein Schwamm. Das Sockelgestein dagegen l\u00e4sst kein Wasser durch und ist von Westen nach Osten leicht geneigt. Am s\u00fcd\u00f6stlichen Hang des Waterbergs gibt es daher mehrere Schicht-Quellen, an denen das Wasser wieder austritt – auch w\u00e4hrend der Trockenzeit von Mai bis September. Der Waterberg tr\u00e4gt seinen Namen also zu Recht. Eine dieser Schichtquellen sprudelt am Ende des Tals von Waterberg Wilderness und liefert wohlschmeckendes Trinkwasser. Au\u00dferdem speist sie die Schwimm- und Tauchbecken f\u00fcr die G\u00e4ste sowie die Wasserstellen f\u00fcr das Wild.<\/p>\n
Ber\u00fchmt ist der Waterberg f\u00fcr das 1972 gegr\u00fcndete Naturschutz-Reservat auf seinem Plateau, das direkt an Waterberg Wilderness grenzt. Im ‚Waterberg Plateau Park‘ lebt Wild wie B\u00fcffel, Breitmaul- und Spitzmaul-Nashorn sowie Giraffe, Eland, Pferde- und Rappen-Antilope.<\/p>\n
